If you’re looking to upgrade your lagging computer with more RAM, this guide will steer you in the right direction to get the most bang for your buck.

To complete this how-to, you will need:

Computer’s manufacturer
Computer’s model number
Internet access
Technician

Step 1: Determine type of DDR

Determine whether your system requires DDR, DDR2, or DDR3 memory.

Newer, faster computers will generally need DDR3 memory while older computers may require DDR or DDR2.

Step 2: Choose to add or upgrade

Choose to add more memory to your existing RAM or to remove your current memory and upgrade to something different.

If you add more memory, make sure it matches your current memory or you could damage your computer.

Step 3: Check online

Use your computer manufacturer’s name and your computer’s model number to check online for compatible DDR memory.

Step 4: Decide on a brand

Decide on a brand of memory. Name brands cost more but generally have higher quality parts and are subject to more extensive testing.

Step 5: Find a technician

Find a technician to answer any questions, help narrow your search, and install the memory properly.

Researchers have found that the mere anticipation of a fearful situation can activate two memory-forming regions of the brain — even before the event has occurred.
